Information for constituents

Over the next few weeks, we'll be building this section into a resource for constituents and campaigners alike, with details of campaigns George is involved with, news about local issues and information about George's constituency activities. In the meantime, here's a brief introduction to the work George has been doing on behalf of the people of Bethnal Green & Bow.

Housing privatisation

George has been centrally involved in trying to stop the council privatising the entire council housing stock. Government legislation requires the council to ballot tenants before transfer. George has held public meetings and written letters to residents on the targeted estates to explain the case to stay with the council and, alongside Defend Council Housing campaigners, has succeeded in a substantial number of ballots to get a No vote despite the organisations trying to take over the estates spending millions on glossy propaganda.

Tower Hamlets: housing for people, not for profit!

Health

George has recently challenged the health cuts and the particularly the cuts in mental health that Tower Hamlets now faces. He has also raised with themary Care Trust the resignations that have occurred over clinical practice at the government’s flagship privatised walk-in centre in Canary Wharf. And George is demanding a public enquiry into maladministration and worse at the Royal London hospital which has put patient welfare in jeopardy. The demand for the public enquiry has been unsuccessful so far but he campaign has only just begun. George also remains opposed to the PFI deal which will cost the taxpayer almost 35 billion to build a much-needed new Royal London hospital.

Crossrail

George has entered his own petition and supported that of others opposing Crossrail’s plans which threaten years of misery to many in Tower Hamlets. It is clear the digging hole in the Brick Lane area was suddenly abandoned because of the campaign against it George led with others. However the threat remains as does the campaign against it.

Strip clubs & planning permission

George is challenging the apparently enabling attitude the council’s planning department has to strip, lap and pole dancing clubs which are currently operating in Tower Hamlets without appropriate planning permission. The council’s attitude, which seems to be that there is nothing they can do even when planning permission has clearly been flouted, is in contrast to that of Greenwich council which recently stopped a lap dancing club opening an hour before it was officially due to do so because it lacked appropriate planning permission. George is enthusiastically pursuing a campaign to rid Tower Hamlets of these dens of iniquity especially in residential areas and areas close to places of worship.

The Olympics

George has raised the threat of radioactive pollution and other pollutants threatening residents and workers alike at the former West Ham tip site which is destined to become part of the Olympic village. Most recently, he has written the chief executive of the Health and Safety Executive to ask what they can do to ensure that this does not become the "toxic" Olympics. He has also raised concerns about the costs of the Olympics which appear to be spiralling out of control.

These are just some of the issues on which George has been campaigning in his Bethnal Green & Bow constituency. He has also taken up and pursued hundreds of individual constituents’ problems through his constituency office and surgery. George Galloway holds a surgery every Friday at 9 Club Row, London E1 6JX from 3pm to 6pm. You don’t need to make an appointment.
