Galloway condemns brutal murder in his constituency

January 1 2007

George Galloway today condemned the brutal and senseless murder of an 83 year old man, Ferozur Rahman, in his constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow. Mr Rahman, who was disabled, was attacked by one or more intruders sometime before Friday afternoon and died of his injuries later in the Royal London Hospital. This was the first murder in Tower Hamlets for two years. Local people have linked the murder to drug dealing and drug related crimes which, they say, are rife in the area.

"I am appalled by this terrible attack on a defenceless and disabled old man. Such an attack would be heinous in any circumstance," said George Galloway, "but it is particularly sick that it should have taken place when we are celebrating Christmas and Eid and looking forward to welcoming the New Year. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

"I will be contacting the police borough commader, the council's chief executive and other relevant bodies to discuss what action can be urgently taken to catch the perpetrators and to purge from our borough the criminal activity which gives rise to such attacks. Above all, we need urgent action to reassure the people living on Mr Rahman's estate that the relevant authorities will take the necessary action to ensure their safety and security."
